Learning. Learning is the big topic around the SSS. Bluntly by heart, and also to understand contexts. You can't do SSS without learning. Some of the content is antiquated, but most of it is still highly topical. The KVR, for example, remain valid no matter how long they have been around.
Other topics, such as radar plotting, have now been overtaken by technology. Nevertheless, the conclusion is that the SSS makes perfect sense, not only because of the opportunity it provides to sail with guests for a fee, but also because the participants learn something that can be useful on the water in one situation or another.
